Maintain healthy bowel movements

Inspect your stool and take probiotics and enzymes daily

Maybe you never heard this health recommendation before: check the color, smell and shape of your stool! Much can be told about your health by your stool.

It usually takes about 40-45 hours for food to go through your system. If it takes longer, water is re-absorbed from your stool back into your body, making your stool harder. A lack of fiber in your diet, illness, and some medications will also make for hard stools.  Feces that take too long to go through the GI track putrefy, ferment and can be reabsorbed into your body.

A bowel movement should be easy to pass and soft, but not too soft. You should not have "pellets," pencil-thin, or watery stools. The color will vary with your diet, but watch for pale or gray stools which could indicate problems with your liver or pancreas. And, of course, if you find blood in your stool you need to get checked by your health professional. Smell can also let you know something is out of balance.

You should have at least one or two bowel movements a day; if not, you are holding toxins in your body. A periodic good cleansing of the colon can be achieved with enemas, herbs, colonics, and colon hydrotherapy. Your colon health and water consumption effect the outcome of these procedures and your health professional will advise what choice is best for you.

Probiotics, friendly bacteria that replenish the intestinal micro flora and help the body digest and absorb food, fight off many different illnesses and disease.  Digestive enzymes are secreted along the gastrointestinal tract and break down the food in the body so that the nutrients can be absorbed.

Enzymes are protein-based substances essential to all body functions, including digestion. Without enzymes, the body cannot completely break down food to absorb their nutrients. Nutrients in poorly digested food are not completely broken down and usable. The enzymes in raw food help start the process of digestion which reduces the body's need to secret digestive enzymes. Food enzymes are destroyed when cooking at moderate or high temperatures. You can improve your digestion by adding a digestive enzyme to break down the food as it sits in the upper stomach. It can then predigest completely, which improves the entire digestive process, and your health.
