Lack of sleep

The term insomnia literally means a lack of sleep. However, it is used to indicate a relative inability to sleep consistently such as difficulty in falling asleep, difficulty in remaining asleep, waking too early in the morning, or a combination of these complaints. The main symptom is the difficulty in falling asleep, but other symptoms are a decrease in the quality and duration of the sleep, persistent changes in the sleep patterns, and the need to get up to urinate at night.

The most common cause of sleeplessness is mental tension brought about by anxiety, worries, overwork, and excitement. Suppressed feelings of resentment, anger, and bitterness may also cause insomnia. Constipation, overeating at night, excessive intake of tea or coffee, smoking, and going to bed hungry are among other causes.  Even worrying about falling asleep can be enough to keep a person awake.

The sleep protocol

This protocol includes eating habits guidelines, wholefood supplement recommendations, a herbal tea to make the body sleepy, and another herbal powder to "knock out" a person if necessary. Once the cycle is broken with sedative herbs, sleep improves gradually and dependence on the herbs reduces.

There are certain nutrients that are also vital to the normal function of the nervous system of which we need an adequate supply at all times.  These include essential fatty acids, vitamins C, B, and E, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. Unless they are in plentiful supply during times of stress, a deficiency may arise, further exacerbating any stress-related problems.  These deficiencies need to be identified if any.

Western nervine herbs such as chamomile, passionflower, wild oats, vervain, wild oats, and skullcap can also be taken during the day to reduce accumulating tension and thereby aid sleep at night.  Additionally, Ayurveda provides a doshic/individualized approach with a wide range of powdered herbal formulas to effectively reduce anxiety and produce a night of restful sleep.   Other factors also need to be addressed such as bedding, sleeping environment, lifestyle habits, and EMF levels.
